Why Prenatal Paternity Testing?
In many states, there are laws requiring unmarried couples to fill out a form called an Acknowledgment of Paternity when their child born. The Acknowledgment of Paternity form is a legal document recognizing the child's biological father. If the Acknowledgment of Paternity form is not completed, and the mother has not been married within the 300 days previous to the delivery, the child's birth certificate will list no father.

How Prenatal Paternity Tests Work
While your child is still in the womb, GTL can help you perform prenatal paternity testing using DNA samples gathered during the first or second trimester of your pregnancy. Unlike other paternity tests, however, where you can collect your own samples, prenatal paternity testing requires that certain DNA samples be collected by your OB/GYN via a CVS procedure or an amniocentesis. When gathering DNA through the CVS procedure, chorionic villi from the placenta are collected. Since this process can begin as early as 10-12 weeks, it is the preferred method for paternity tests being conducted in the first trimester. When gathering DNA through an amniocentesis procedure, a sample of amniotic fluid is drawn and collected. An accurate amniocentesis can be performed between 12 and 21 weeks, making it another option for second-trimester paternity tests.

Results for all of our paternity tests will be mailed directly to you or someone you designate. For Internet orders, you can track your order status and get your test results online as soon as they are available. Unless we have agreed to prior arrangements with you, we do not give results from paternity tests over the phone.

How to Read Your DNA Test Results
For an overwhelming majority of cases, results from paternity tests are unequivocal. Quite simply, the alleged father is "excluded" or "not excluded" as the biological father. To calculate a paternity index, 15 identity loci are analyzed individually. Then, the individual indexes are combined to formulate a "combined paternity index."
