Missing Parent DNA Tests
In cases where the mother or father is missing or deceased, this DNA test helps in determining paternity or maternity by using the DNA from the maternal or paternal grandparents (parents of the missing alleged mother or father).
The following example will help you understand how this test works:
A mother has a child and wishes to know if a man (the alleged father) is the biological father of the child. But, this alleged father is missing, unavailable, or deceased. If the alleged father’s biological parents (i.e., the child's alleged paternal grandparents) are available, however, a profile can be derived from their DNA patterns that can then be used to test paternity of the missing alleged father. In this case, the ideal situation is to submit DNA samples from the mother, child, and both alleged paternal grandparents. It is also possible to conduct this testing with only the child and both alleged paternal grandparents (mother excluded), but this should only be done when the mother is not available.
