How DNA Paternity Testing Works
In understanding just how DNA paternity testing works in determining paternity, it is worthwhile to take very abridged genetics lesson.
A child's genetic makeup consists of 46 chromosomes, which include 23 from the mother's egg and 23 from the father's sperm. The 23 chromosomes from each parent pairs up, creating two unique DNA sequences at each location (or "locus", pl. "loci") or pairing of each chromosomal set. DNA paternity testing then identifies specific DNA sequences for multiple loci in the mother, child, and father. If the mother and father are indeed the biological parents of the child, the two DNA sequences at each locus in the child's chromosomes must have been inherited from each parent. By determining the relationship between these DNA sequences, DNA paternity testing can then establish whether there is a paternal relationship.
Determining Paternity: The Accuracy of DNA Paternity Testing
DNA paternity testing is currently the single-most accurate method for determining paternity. The probability of determining paternity can be calculated from the chromosomal information gathered through a simple buccal or blood sample collection process. In some instances, this probability can be completely accurate up 99.99999%.
To further ensure accuracy in DNA paternity testing, GTL is AABB accredited. As such, we have undergone a thorough review and inspection of our laboratory and testing processes to ensure our DNA paternity testing is accurate and thorough. Our facilities also participate in proficiency tests and are subject to bi-annual inspections. When it involves the future of your child, we at GTL will gladly go to great lengths to give you the information you need, quickly and accurately.
Note: GTL achieves a high degree of determining paternity through DNA paternity testing by testing 16 chromosomal locations. Some less ethical and less reputable companies will test as few as 5 chromosomal locations while charging the same price GTL charges for DNA tests that cover a full 16 locations. In doing so, they jeopardize the integrity of the paternity test. When testing as few as 5 locations, it is an entirely real possibility that a true biological father can be excluded from a test. This benefits nobody, and it particularly harms your child.
Affordable DNA Paternity Testing
When a question regarding the identity of a child's father arises, it is most likely a stressful situation. Add to that the cost of proving fatherhood, through scientific testing and/or the court system, and the cost of determining paternity makes it even more stressful. That's why GTL offers DNA paternity testing starting at $99. The less money you have to spend on DNA paternity testing is more money you can spend on your child. We even offer prenatal paternity testing in the event that you need assistance in determining paternity before the child is born.
